Divergent Trilogy

In which I finally get around to reading the Divergent trilogy. | A book review by NewberyandBeyond.com

I know I’m late to jump on this bandwagon, but I finally read the Divergent trilogy. I had heard mixed reviews from some of my bookish friends, so I went in with a bit of trepidation. And I really enjoyed the series! (Warning: *spoilers* for all three books, so don’t read on if you haven’t finished the series.)

Basically, the premise is that there are five factions in this dystopian Chicago settlement. Each one (Abnegation, Dauntless, Candor, Amity, and Erudite) trains its children to cultivate a certain attribute like honesty, friendship, or courage. While this sounds great on the surface, Tris soon finds that there are dangerous problems in the system–especially once you’re classified as divergent.

This series has gotten a lot of comparisons with The Hunger Games trilogy, and for good reason. Both feature a strong teenage girl who is forced to fight to defend her home and family in a dystopian world with questionable leaders. However, this didn’t ruin the series for me. I found Tris to be very different from Katniss. She is ruthless, almost unfeeling at times, and while this meant that I didn’t connect as deeply with her as I did with Katniss, I found Tris to be a very interesting character to read about.

Her romance with Four, on the other hand, I didn’t really care for. I didn’t find it offensive, but I just wasn’t invested in their romance at all. And while I found the ending of the series exciting and a great end to the story, I didn’t bawl like I did at the end of Mockingjay.

That basically explains my feelings about this series in general–exciting, but not emotionally enthralling. I know a lot of readers will disagree with me on this, so maybe I’m heartless. 🙂  Still, I enjoyed the series greatly, and I can’t wait to see what else Veronica Roth has up her sleeve.

Rating: Pretty Darn Good
